Spirit of East Canfield Village: A Mural by Mila Lynn

September 24, 2025

It took about 60 cans of paint to bring Spirit of East Canfield Village to life, but what it carries is something even more powerful: the stories and memories of a neighborhood. Created by Detroit artist @mindofmila, the mural draws from forgotten photographs and community landmarks, honoring the people and places that shaped East Canfield’s identity.

Among the images are tributes to East Canfield Village legends, including the Detroit Stars of the Negro National League, who played most of their career here except for a single season in Hamtramck. Their presence ties East Canfield to a larger story of Black history and excellence, reminding us that this neighborhood has always been connected to something bigger. There are also glimpses of the Brewer Recreation Center and Joy Middle School, both closed in the early 2000s and later demolished. Brewer Rec was once one of Detroit’s most active community centers, home to a gym, swimming pool, boxing ring, and classrooms where children studied art, science, and literature. Alongside Joy Middle School, it was a hub of daily life. Painting them back into view ensures they are remembered, even after the buildings themselves are gone.

Mila built the mural from Polaroids, and that choice matters. Polaroids are immediate, intimate, and deeply personal — much like neighborhood memory. They capture moments as they are, imperfect yet authentic, and they live on in shoeboxes and photo albums long after the moment has passed. In the mural they become something larger, fragments of East Canfield history woven into a public canvas.

Throughout the painting process, neighbors stopped to share stories and reactions. Children pointed at familiar faces, while one longtime resident paused in quiet recognition, struck by the sight of his community reflected back at him. These moments became part of the artwork, proof that public art is as much about connection as it is about paint.

For Mila, if the mural could speak, its message would be simple: know your roots. That idea runs through every brushstroke, calling on residents to remember what came before and to take pride in what remains. Spirit of East Canfield Village is more than public art. It is a lasting tribute to the past, a celebration of the present, and a reminder that resilience will always be part of East Canfield’s story.
