In East Canfield Village, independence is not just a date on the calendar. It is an ongoing pursuit of health, safety, and self-determination. It is the ability to shape our environment, care for our neighbors, and create spaces where we can thrive.
For many Black Americans, July 4th is complicated. Frederick Douglass captured this tension in 1852 when he asked, “What, to the American slave, is your Fourth of July?” His words still resonate today in communities that have long been excluded from the full promise of freedom.
To us, independence means reclaiming what was denied. It means breathing clean air, planting roots in our neighborhood, and having a say in what gets built and what gets preserved. It means healing from environmental harm while building something better for future generations.
That’s why environmental justice is part of our freedom story.
When neighborhoods like East Canfield face higher rates of pollution and lower access to green space, it is not by accident. It is the result of policies that have overlooked our health for decades. But we are not waiting for someone else to fix it. We are taking action.
The Remediation Forest, located in the East Canfield Art Park, is one of the ways we are doing just that. This space brings together trees, art, community, and purpose. It helps clean our air while serving as a living reminder of our power to transform our surroundings. The forest represents healing, but also resistance. It stands for everything we are working toward—a neighborhood where Black families are not just surviving, but flourishing.
We honor our ancestors not just by remembering their fight. We honor them by continuing it. Black freedom is not a moment. It is a movement.
In that spirit, we believe independence also means:
- Creating spaces where we are safe, seen, and sovereign
- Healing from generations of trauma
- Protecting the health of our children and elders
- Sharing our stories on our own terms
- Growing joy, beauty, and legacy in the heart of our community
- Standing up for clean air, clean water, and shared green space
Every step we take toward environmental justice brings us closer to real freedom. And in East Canfield, we are moving with purpose.
Our green spaces are growing. Our voices are rising. And our future is rooted in something powerful.
